“What’s great about being a parent who writes is that you constantly have material. ... I know I have to write everything down before I forget it.” ~Wendy Lee, author...
Pen Parentis is running a transformative pilot program this school year (starting Fall 2017) to teach an innovative community-building creative writing workshop to the parents of middle school students in NYC District 2 Public Schools. We have initially partnered with a large, new public middle school (PS 297 aka “75 Morton”) whose principal is eager to host our pilot program. Jacqui Getz has 25 years of experience as a principal and is excited to launch this community-building series of workshops to be taught by an award-winning short story writer. Pen Parentis is delighted to provide professional writers as instructors for these workshops.
All of our Title members who have interest in teaching are invited to submit their CVs to be considered for upcoming years.
This program falls squarely under the Pen Parentis mission: to keep writers on creative track after starting a family. The program will be free of charge to the participants – we are extremely inclusive of all levels of income, gender, race, religion, etc. (In fact, inclusion is one of our core values.)
PENGUIN-RANDOM HOUSE has just donated 30 copies of Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott (published by Anchor Books) which we will give to the initial 30 workshop participants at 75 Morton as an incentive to sign up for the writing workshop, and to inspire them to their own creativity as their middle-schoolers begin the process of growing into young adults in their own right.
Thank you Penguin-Random House!
