The writer chosen for the Baltic Writing Residency in Sweden receives $1,000, and a free stay in a furnished cottage, based on a completed application. Applications are chosen by an anonymous peer-review committee, including a fiction writer, a poet, and a member of Harvard University’s English Department. To apply, candidates are required to submit all of the following by January 15 of each year (translations are admissible). We are more than open to genre writing (YA, sci-fi, romance, thriller, crime, &c.).
The Sweden Residency is located in Stockholm, and the writer resides, for 3 – 4 weeks at a time most convenient for them in a furnished cottage. Stockholm encompasses 14 islands of the vast Stockholm archipelago on the Baltic Sea. The cobblestone streets and ochre-colored buildings of medieval Gamla Stan, the old town, are home to a 13th-century cathedral, the royal palace of Kungliga Slottet and its underground armory, cafes and restaurants. Ferries and sightseeing boats shuttle passengers between islands, beneath more than 50 bridges. There are fifteen official UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Sweden comprising thirteen cultural sites, one natural site and one mixed site.
